What’s going on here?

This Substack (Engineer of Joy) is designed to do exactly that: help you engineer an experience of being joyfully alive as your default way of being.

There are two key premises there:

  1. That it’s possible to have “joyfully alive” as your normal state

  2. That there are reliable, repeatable processes that can get you to that new normal

Most people seem to experience life as a series of struggles, problems, and challenges punctuated by infrequent moments of contentment or relaxation… but I don’t live that way, and you don’t have to either.

You can spend most of your time in the present rather than the past or future. You can be joyful rather than anxious or in “hustle mode.” You can feel ALIVE in every aspect of your being rather than feeling numb, disconnected, or on autopilot.

Which tools will be most valuable to you specifically will vary from person to person - this journey is not “one size fits all,” which is exactly why I will help you diagnose your current reality and what tools to use.

Of course, I also recognize that these may seem like big promises, and there are tons of people who say similar things but deliver only useless fluff. Which brings us to my least favorite part of this whole endeavor…

Who am I?

I don’t like to focus on my own personal story. I prefer to discuss the ideas, concepts, and principles that people can use to improve their lives.

But I also recognize that many (if not most) people will want to know why they should listen to anything I have to say in the first place.

The best way to make this decision would be to read a sampling of my posts (I’d recommend this one, this one, this one, and this one as tasters). But if you’re still deciding whether to spend that time sampling, then I’ll share a little bit of self-promotion…

  • For people who want to see credentials: I’m a published academic in biomolecular engineering (including as first author), so I have a strong grounding in science. I know the corporate world from my time as a top-tier strategy consultant (at Boston Consulting Group) and as a Director in the quantitative finance space. As a coach (my primary calling), I am a Trainer of Neurolinguistic Programming and certified in Meta Performance Coaching (among others).

  • For people who respect “real world” experience/accomplishments: I’ve been coaching professionally since 2013 and full-time since 2016, during which time I’ve sold over $1 million worth of business. I’ve made (and lost) fortunes in financial trading, but at the end of the day, I’m now positioned such that I could retire today if I wanted to.

I’ve personally coached hundreds of clients (including major league athletes, Fortune 500 executives, and multibillion-dollar fund managers) - NONE of whom has completed their work with me and complained about not getting the promised result. Some of those outcomes have been related to career, but this work has also helped save 5 marriages so far.

  • For those who want to know me as a human: I’ve lived the highs and lows of life fast and early. I know the peaks of unbridled delight, I know the pain of losing almost everything, and I know the resilience of rebuilding. Like many people, I’ve experienced agonizing tragedy that has taught me deep empathy (which I didn’t have much of in my youth). To the best of my ability, I live my life by core principles like Truth and Love, regardless of whether it benefits me externally or not, and I find deep fulfillment in doing so.

If any of this resonates with you, then I’d encourage you to join me as we make our way through the journey of Life by clicking below. To quote Ram Dass, “We’re all just walking each other home.”
